Haruno Watanabe LIVE Saturday 1pm SLT at the Zodiac Ballroom
25/10/2009

Haruno Watanabe, has a Japanese origin with Boston Accent (she would like to think so but people call it "Japanese Haruno accent") living in the United States, has been classically trained since her childhood. She was a member of Tanglewood Festival Chorus, chorus group for Boston Symphony and Boston Pops for over 7 years. Singing has been always her passion in her life, but she stopped singing a couple years ago in real life because of some personal reasons. Then she found Second Life and has been having a blast singing and meeting other musicians from all over the world. She started singing again.
"Unlike her past experience singing Japanese folk music, Opera and Operetta, she sings showtune, Jazz Standards, Pops and Japanese pop on Second Life." That is what she said when she started singing at Second Life. She sang "O mio babbino caro", the beautiful opera aria at one of the concerts. Since then she has been asked to sing more opera arias by her fans. If requested, she will sing opera aria. She carefully picks songs that have beautiful lyrics and melody. Her friends describe her singing, "a voice pure like a crystal", "fragil and strong in music notes with all her emotion", "lovely and yet fearless sensation around her voice", and "just close your eyes and her voice will transport you far away."

from the Cape Able Art Gallery
22/09/2009
This months exhibition in the Nova Straaf Gallery displays artists from the Cape Able Art Gallery in Second Life, a project of Virtual Ability. A beautiful, eclectic gallery, featuring prominent deaf/disabled artists from SL and RL. The Cape Able Art Gallery is presented by Nicolo Anthony of the RL Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY.
Artist's Statement, Adelene Dawner
What should I say to explain my work? I do things, a wide variety of things, and some people consider some of them art. I'm less 'creating' and more 'translating', most of the time. I code: write computer programs. That's creating/translating just as much as 'art' is, but most people don't think of it that way. I also have a lot of friends that I talk to, often taking what I see about a person's thought pattern or behavior pattern and the results of those, and translating it back to words so they can see it. I brainstorm, and I'm good at figuring out how a thing can be done. I like explaining things to people, and I learn well enough that I can have something explained to me poorly and explain it to someone else well, especially if I have the opportunity to ask the original explainer for clarifications on unclear points.
Artist's Statement, Scottius Polke
Scottius Polke's focus is primarily assemblage/mixed media constructions, with occasional forays into more illustrative arts, such as ink and pastel. He first started exploring the medium of assemblage/found objects in college, thanks to the inspiration of one of his professors. Other influences from the art world have included mixed media artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Cornell and Anton Tapies.
Artist's Statement, Ronin1 Shippe
Ronin1 Shippe is an SL and RL artist, whose mediums include wood, clay, steel, and "painting" on the computer's virtual canvass. His SL paintings are studies in minimalism - Zen Impressionist works which strive to capture a mood, a moment, or a feeling - often whimsy - with only a minimal number of lines.
Artist Statement, Hope McAlpine
" A true artist knows thyself well as a teacher and is unfearful of challenge that is presented to them throughout their life and has the ablitly to translate their personal journey into a visual statement and thereby serve as an uplighting to others. Desire no need to copy others but love thyself well as an artist. "
Hope McAlpine have been blessed with gift of visual arts since birth, that has been given throughout her generatiion, from one to others. She discovered the meaning of art when she turned just three years old. Perhaps being born profoundly deaf further pushed her farther into a journey of life as an artist. Espeically while growing up with no means to communicate through writing, speaking, hearing or reading til she was about 8.
Hope McAlpine is the founder and Commander of Melissa's Blue Angel Police and Fire memorial Community Garden. The purpose of this memorial garden is to honor real life fallen police officers and firefighters and a place where people can come and reflect on fallens. Hope McAlpine currently studying for criminal justice. Law Enforcement is a big part of her real life.

Out of his fingers comes an array of string sounds that blend the colors of Latin American culture with his own elegant performing style. One of the hardest working musicians in SL, Joaquin never puts the guitar down. He is forever focused on giving one hundred percent to every performance. His wide range playlist includes smooth jazz, rock, tango, milonga, candombe and much more. His magnetic charm is as appealing as his musical talent, and managed to build a very successful fan base. He has a very warm interaction with the audience, always ready for dedications and requests.
Galaxy Saved!!!
12/02/2009
Dear Galaxy Community,
It was recently announced, the SS Galaxy has been hit by a economic downturn and has not been able to sustain itself and due to close at the end of the month.
Well I have very good news. The SS Galaxy will NOT close!
A benefactor has agreed to take over the tier of the Galaxy. This new owner has assured me there will be little change in the day to day operations of the Galaxy. He is only interested in saving the ship from closure, not administrative duties. But Bill Stirling will take on less of a administrative role returning to Sag building projects, that have been put on hold due to lack of time. However, he shall still be around with building and doing future modifications to the Galaxy.
I shall stay on as Managing Director and most of the current staff will remain as well. A new dawn has come to the Galaxy!

SS Galaxy Closing
09/02/2009
Dear Galaxy Community,
It is with great sadness I write to inform you the SS Galaxy will be closed and deleted from the SL grid on March 1st. With the effect of the world economic downturn, the Galaxy project is unable to sustain itself. After two years to the date of this project's start and large amount of resources spent with no recovery in sight, the financier of the Galaxy have decided to call it a quits.
If no serious action comes forth to save the ship by Feb 15th, the Galaxy will be destroyed in a spectacular sinking event on March 1st. It promise to be an event of a life time, just like the Galaxy herself has been. Stay tuned for group notice on the details.
Until then, our staff will be focused on the following house keeping tasks:
- all current occupied rooms and mall vendors will be allowed to stay till Feb 28. If you have paid rents beyond Feb 28 as of this message, we will refund your rents from March 1 and on.
- all unoccupied rooms' rent boxes have been set to 2 weeks max. The ship will stay open and operational for all to enjoy till the very end.
- room and service certificates will be honored as long as rooms and services are available. The last day to redeem certificates will be Feb 22.
- all personal objects will need to be removed from the ship by Feb 28. If you do not clean up your own objects, we cannot guarantee their safe return during the sinking process.
A Galaxy Museum is planned in SL and the website will survive as an archival site. We would like to preserve the "Galaxy Experience" and her memories as much as we can. There is even a possibility of a book with collections of stories and images from the Galaxy, "Life on the Galaxy". We'll let you know soon on how to contribute into the collection.
To our valued community members, we thank you for embarking on this most wonderful SL journey with us and your support and involvement which kept the Galaxy going in the last two years.
To the Galaxy Team, same as IRL, "the crew makes the ship", you've made the Galaxy Experience possible and special. It was an honor and pleasure serving with you. No matter what happens after this month, and wherever you carry on with your SL, you will always be part of the Galaxy family and the Galaxy yours.
Mahalo for the best two years of my SL. Aloha.
